Breast and Thyroid Surgeon and Surgical Oncologist

Dr Michael Eaton graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1985 and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in General Surgery in 1993. After 12 months as a Senior Registrar in General Surgery at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, he then spent two years in laboratory – based research using molecular biology techniques to investigate the clinical significance of tumour cells in blood and bone marrow. He was awarded the post-graduate degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Adelaide in 1997, with his thesis entitled ““Assessment of CD44 and K19 as markers for circulating breast cancer cells using immunobead RT-PCR”.

He has been a visiting surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre since 1996, being attached to the Breast and Endocrine Surgical Unit. He has been Head of the Breast and Endocrine Unit since 2014.

Michael was a Visiting Surgeon at BreastScreen South Australia from 1998 to 2015, and again since 2018. He is an Examiner in General Surgery for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine at the Flinders University of South Australia.

His principal research interests are the lobar distribution of breast disease, and the surgical management of ductal carcinoma in-situ of the breast.

His outdoor interests are around the Flinders Ranges, the West Coast or Kangaroo Island, where walking or fishing are the excuses.
